Before you can come to the Netherlands, most non-EU people must pass the Civic Integration Exam Abroad (basisexamen inburgering buitenland) at a Dutch embassy. This page gives you everything you need to prepare: exam info, all 100 KNS questions with answers, and practice resources.
The exam takes roughly 2 hours at the embassy and is done entirely on a computer with headphones and a microphone. You do not need to write anything by hand.
100 fixed questions about the Netherlands: geography, government, healthcare, education, daily life and norms. You study all 100 in advance. On exam day, 30 are selected at random.
Two parts: you hear questions through a headset and answer out loud (Vraag-Antwoord); and you hear the start of a sentence and complete it by speaking (Zinnen afmaken). Your spoken answers are scored by human assessors, not the computer.
Several short parts, all multiple choice: you read words and short texts (signs, notices, simple messages) and answer questions, and you match spoken and written words. The whole component is marked automatically by computer.
These are the official fixed questions from the Naar Nederland study book. You must learn all 100. On exam day, 30 are selected, and you need 21 correct to pass. Study them in groups of 10, or test yourself in quiz mode.
Switch between Study mode (click any question to reveal the answer) and Quiz mode (two answer options, A or B, exactly like the real exam). Use the group buttons to work through the 100 questions in sets of 10.
The speaking exam has two parts. In Vraag-Antwoord you hear a question and answer it out loud; in Zinnen afmaken you hear the start of a sentence and complete it. Practise here by saying your answer aloud first, then tap the card to check a model answer.
Choose a part below. Read each prompt, say your answer out loud (record yourself on your phone if you like), then tap the card to reveal a sample answer. At A1, short, clear answers score best.
These are practice examples in the exam style, not the official exam questions. The official practice exams are on naarnederland.nl.
The reading exam is all multiple choice: matching spoken and written words, and reading short texts such as signs, notices and simple messages. Try these example questions and get instant feedback, just like the quiz mode in the KNS section.
Read each question and pick the answer you think is correct. You will see straight away whether it was right, with a short explanation. At the end you get a score.
These are practice examples in the exam style, not the official exam questions. For the official practice reading exam, see naarnederland.nl.
